چکیده

The radioactivity released as a result of the explosions of the No.4 Reactor at the Chernobyl NPP plant in 1986 caused a number of severe problems affecting many countries worldwide. One of the greatest concerns was the release, transport and subsequent deposition of caesium-137, a long-lived radionuclide (half life T1/2 = 30.1 y), which is able to pass through the food chain and accumulate in milk, fish and other food products (Travnikova et al. 2004, Schwaiger et al. 2004, Forberg et al. 1994, Voors & Weers 1989). Over the years following the accident, the Ukrainian government undertook regular analyses of foodstuffs produced in contaminated areas and these data were published in the reports of the Ministry of Emergencies and Affairs of Population Protection from Consequences of Chernobyl Catastrophe (see: MESU 2008). For the last two years this monitoring has not been performed, and accordingly an important long-term data set is no longer being added to.

General Situation of the Radiological Consequences of the Chernobyl Accident in Ukraine

Introduction April 26, 1986, will go into history as the date when the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded causing radioactive contamination of a wide area practically in all Europe. The initial explosions and heat carried volatile radioactive materials up to 1.5 km height from where these materials were transported over large territories. Plumes containing numerous quan...

Malignancies in Sweden after the Chernobyl accident in 1986

On 26 April 1986 an accident occurred in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant resulting in the release of large amount of radionuclides. Almost five percent of the total released caesium137 was deposited in Sweden. The incidence of malignancies in the most affected counties in Sweden was investigated in three epidemiological studies. In the first study the incidence of malignancies in children and...

Chernobyl & the marine environment : The radiological impact in context

by Pavel Povinec, Scott Fowler, and Murdoch Baxter I he Chernobyl nuclear accident in April 1986 had a significant impact on both the terrestrial and marine environments. The total activity of the nuclear debris released was so high (1-2.10 becquerel) that the radioactive fallout distributed widely after the accident actually dominated anthropogenic environmental levels in various parts of the ...

اثر مقدار سزیم137 ورودی به بدن در جذب آن در بافت

Some dangerous radionuclides can be distributed in the environment because of human activities. Nuclear weapon tests and big nuclear catastrophic events such as Chernobyl and Fokushima accidents are among such activities. Cs-137 is one of the most important released radionuclides during the accidents. Due to its long half-life (around 30 years), it can exist in the environment after the ...

The Chernobyl disaster: cancer following the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The Chernobyl nuclear power plant, located in Ukraine about 130 km north of the capital of Kiev and about 10 km south of the border with Belarus, was the scene of the most severe accident that has ever occurred in the nuclear industry. On April 26, 1986, two violent explosions destroyed the core of unit 4 of the power plant and the roof of the building, resulting in a series of fires and in mas...
